Well, if someone on your list is a fan of wickedly barbed satire, then the title to this 1974 album is indeed accurate! The Credibility Gap was the training ground for Michael McKean and Harry Shearer (of Spinal Tap fame) and David L. Lander (he played Squiggy on Laverne & Shirley; McKean played Lenny), and from their slot on the Los Angeles public radio station KPCC, they surveyed political and pop culture with a sharp, penetrating eye rivaled by few during the era. And this record captures them at their peak; Kingpin is a blaxploitation movie based on the life of Martin Luther King that hilariously reworks Mayfield s music from Superfly, while Where s Johnny stars Shearer as a dead ringer for Johnny Carson wrestling with the awkward subject of gay liberation. Other targets include a surprisingly bourgeois Sly Stone (An Evening with Sly Stone), sex education (Public Service Announcement) and vacuous, mid- 70s youth culture (You Can t Judge a Book by Its Hair).
